¶ Subject bibliographies

I have prepared a number of subject bibliographies. For Urban History's long-running 'Bibliography of urban history', I prepared three updates which are held in the searchable database. I helped with the preparation of this database after OCR scanning of archives from back numbers of the journal and its predecessor Urban History Yearbook, resolving various problems identified. The print versions are:

  • ‘Bibliography of urban history 2008’, Urban History, 35, 3 (2008), pp.524-73.
  • ‘Bibliography of urban history 2009’, Urban History, 36, 3 (2009), pp.519-77.
  • ‘Bibliography of urban history 2010’, Urban History, 37, 3 (2010), pp.499-551.

For the History of Education Society, I prepared similar updates for their bibliography of periodic literature, and co-authored two historiographical reviews. The database can be searched here on Exe libris. The reviews using these data are found here:

An on-going project is for the Old Edinburgh Club whose bibliography I designed and have prepared two tranches of data for the Bibliography of Edinburgh History which now numbers over two thousand articles, books, chapters and dissertations. The project is explained and considered in my short, freely available article “Finding Edinburgh’s Past: introducing The OEC Bibliography of Edinburgh History’, Book of the Old Edinburgh Club, 16 (2020), pp.103-7. This has helped create a valuable resource for the Old Edinburgh Club, as well as engaging many members in suggestions for expansion.

Preparing subject bibliographies is a satisfying task as they are of great value to user groups. I would be very happy to discuss updating or designing one for you. Typically, they are high impact relative to the resources involved.

Welcome

As I move around, working in different institutions and independently, I have decided the easiest thing to do is to pull together information about my work in one place. I am a freelance historian, sometimes working for Leicester Vaughan College, a higher education co-operative I helped establish, but primarily working for private clients. My historical interests are wide, and I can help with any British history after c.1700, with experience and skills in corporate, civic, central governent and personal records of all kinds, the full range of printed matter, oral histories, and material culture. I get great pleasure from weaving narratives and sharing material.  Do please feel free to contact me malcolmjnoble [at] yahoo [dot] co [dot] uk, or if you prefer call +44(0)7791380273. Call for papers: Queer Bibliography workshop

QUEER BIBLIOGRAPHY: TOOLS, METHODS, PRACTICES, APPROACHES  With my colleague Sarah Pyke, I am arranging a workshop in London in February 2023, and am pleased to share the CfP below. Call for papers for a symposium at Senate House, University of London, 4 February 2023* Participants are invited to an optional practice-based workshop on 5 February 2023, venue TBC Sexuality and textuality are tightly bound. From our earliest experiences of media –including print – LGBTQI+ individuals are employing queer interpretative methods and navigating the ways queer identities might be ‘read’ by others. And yet, while literature’s constitutive effect on queer subjectivities is relatively well-worked ground, how exactly print objects inform, acknowledge, embody and produce queer identities and communities is understudied in bibliographic terms. Queer/ing book history is a project that has been advanced both inside and outside the academy (The Queer Book course at London Rare Books School, devised...
